PHENOMENAL!

Lately, Camren has been incorporating the word phenomenal into his vernacular. It has been a delightful experience, watching him attempt to use it in hilarious and random ways. He uses the word to describe mundane tasks and seemingly unimportant events. For example:

“Mom, where are my clothes?”
“I set them on the table, Cam.”
“That is phenomenal.”

 OR…

“Camren, put on your shoes, we are going to the store.”
“That is phenomenal, Mom.”

“Lunch is ready!”
“That’s phenomenal.”

“I washed your blanket.”
“Phenomenal.

And on and on and on! We aren’t quite certain how he knows the word, phenomenal, or where he learned it…but it’s made for some funny moments in my day. Considering my inundation with the word, phenomenal, I have become interested in its meaning. Being the “word nerd” that I am, I looked up the definition: “very remarkable, extraordinary.” I love the list of synonyms Webster Dictionary provides: exceptional, amazing, astonishing, astounding, stunning, incredible, marvelous…should I keep going?! Magnificient, wonderful, fantastic, terrific, awesome!

When I think of the word “phenomenal” I cannot help but think of Maya Angelou’s poem, “Phenomenal Woman.” It is easily one of my favorites! In the poem she talks about all the things that make her a phenomenal woman, from the fire in her eyes to the sun of her smile to the joy in her feet. The last stanza of the poem reads:

“Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
The palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman
That’s me.”

Today I want celebrate phenomenal women everywhere! They are all around us. They sit in our congregations, they live in our neighborhoods. They are a part of our families, they are a part of our communities. Sisters, they are YOU.

A great prophet and spiritual leader, Gordon B. Hinckley, once said, “Woman is God’s supreme creation. Only after the earth had been formed, after the day had been separated from the night, after the waters had been divided from the land, after vegetation and animal life had been created, and after man had been placed on the earth, was woman created; and only then was the work pronounced complete and good. Of all the creations of the Almighty, there is none more beautiful, none more inspiring than a lovely daughter of God who walks in virtue with an understanding of why she should do so, who honors and respects her body as a thing sacred and divine, who cultivates her mind and constantly enlarges the horizon of her understanding, who nurtures her spirit with everlasting truth.”

We are phenomenal women.
Inherently so.
